Psychoanalytic Theory of History HIST380 SP

This seminar will explore the uses of psychoanalysis in historical study. We will examine in depth several classic works and the theories upon which they are based. Among the topics to be explored: the origins of psychoanalysis and its transformation into a major movement; the connections of psychoanalysis with modernization theory, Marxism, feminism, and linguistics; Freudian depth psychology, ego psychology, object-relations theory, psychoformative theory, Lacanian theory and their historical applications.

Works by S. Freud, E. Erikson, N. Chodorow,
H. Marcuse, R.J. Lifton, J. Lacan, and others.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will select topics with the instructor's help and explore it in depth. They may choose a historical topic that lends itself to psychohistorical study or they may study a given author or school. All students will give an oral report to the seminar and write a term paper. History majors may fulfill their research requiremant in this seminar.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

The seminar is designed not only for history majors, but for students interested in intellectual history, psychological theory, and theories of history. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped form the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
