A Social History of France in La Belle Epoque

This course will examine the social and cultural
developments of the years 1870-1914 in France, a period
marked by painful transitions and intense social and
political conflict. Topics will include: the Dreyfus
affair; Charcot, hysteria and madness; the transformation
of peasant life; early feminism; the labor movement; the
intellectual avant-garde; gender and culture.

Three short papers (5-7 pages)
one oral presentation; final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Seminar format in
which student participation is central; preference will be
given to majors. Ability to read in French desirable.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
