This course will survey the history of the United States from the Great Depression of 1893 until recent times, moving back and forth between social, economic, cultural, and political history. I will be giving lectures but will also devote entire sessions to discussions. Much of the reading will be based on primary documents. The unifying theme will be the rise, triumph, and decline of liberalism in America. Students who are considering a major in history or would like to develop a historical dimension to complement their study of other topics are encouraged to take this class.
