The European background to the discovery and colonization of
the New World, the interaction between non-European and
Europeans, the history of Britain's colonies in North
America until independence, the Revolution, the
Constitution, and the New Republic up through the War of
1812. The course will include an optional field trip
to Deerfield, Massachusetts. (Note: Beginning in 1997,
HIST237 will be an amalgamation of HIST237 and HIST238 up
through 1815. Students who have taken HIST238 in the Spring
of 1996 will not receive credit if they enroll in the new
HIST237.)
