This course will examine the policies of the United States
toward other states and peoples, with emphasis on the
twentieth century. Beginning with the Progressive era and
ending with the Clinton administration we will engage the
role of the United States in the international arena, as
well as the ideas and principles which "produce" American
policies and policy decisions. Our inquiry will include:
the nature of expansion; the role of industrialization and
free trade; the meaning(s) of world power status for United
States; the evolution of nuclear diplomacy; the uses of war;
and foreign relations as a central theme in twentieth
century American culture.

Take-home midterm, final; two
2-5 page papers.

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
