Encountering the Other

An exploration of the recent literature about the European
encounter with non-Europeans in the Americas between the
16th and 18th centuries. The course will focus on the
European-Amerindian contact and the experience of British
North America, though not totally to the exclusion of
European interactions with other peoples and in other
locations in the Americas.

Exercises: Five or six short
papers and a longer final paper under the supervision of a
writing tutor.

preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
