A seminar in modern Hebrew literature. Works of prose and
poetry by contemporary Israeli writers will be studied in
the context of major issues of Israeli existence: the
relationship between secularism and traditional Judaism, the
meaning of the Holocaust, conflicts within Israeli society
and relations between Arabs and Jews. Selections from the
Contemporary Israeli press will also be read and discussed.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two short papers, two tests,
and weekly written assignments. Regular participation in
class discussions is required.

Hebrew 202 is a
prerequisite. If students have not taken Hebrew 202 they
may take Hebrew 211 with the permission of the instructor.
