This course will critically examine theories of the state in the developed industrial world over the past 200 years, with an emphasis in recent debates in: a) Marxist b) institutionalist c) feminist theories of the state. Has the traditional nation-state been made redundant by the globalization of the international economy? What scope is there for social movements to influence the state?

Mid term, research paper, two book reports.
