This course will introduce students to the fields of
feminist theory, gender studies, and queer theory. We
will begin by tracing the history of and theoretical debates
within the contemporary U.S. feminist movement. We will
conclude by investigating the development of queer theory
as a field of inquiry. Among the questions we will consider
are: what does it mean to theorize or speak "as a woman"?
What are the relationships between personal experience and
politics, and between sex and gender? How have racial,
class, and sexual differences among women affected the
movement and the field of feminist theory? What is the role
of men as theorists and political actors in the movement?
Throughout the semester the focus will be on exploring what
it means to theorize about identity and politics.
