A survey of modern political theories with attention to their major theoretical innovations, their historical contexts and their contemporary relevance. Major themes will include the nature of sovereignty and the nation state, the idea of liberty and the social contract, the rise of democracy and the problem of political meaning and justice after the dissolution of unified world views. Readings will include Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Mill, and others. This course, together with Government 337 and Government 339, provides a survey of major western political theories, and at least two of these courses are recommended for students concentrating in political theory.
