This course provides an introduction to Western European
political systems. We will focus exclusively on the four
major countries: Britain, France, Germany and Italy. For
each country case, we will look at the historical
development of political economies and political
institutions. This intersection of market and polity--the
tension between social class and citizenship--constitutes
the dominant comparative focus of the course. Through the
use of novels and films as well as more conventional social
scientific texts, the course will also explore the
contemporary relationship between state and society in these
four countries. Thus, the course will explore both
theoretical tools and substantive issues.
