The course provides an introduction to the development of citizenship in the American political system and to mechanisms of democratic accountability. Its central concern is the relationship of citizens to political leaders, and in particular to modes of political participation by which citizens attempt to hold political leaders responsible for their actions, including nominations and elections, campaigns, political parties, interest groups, and social movements. This course is designed specifically for sophomores and juniors. It is also open to seniors and to first-year students who can demonstrate a familiarity with government institutions.

Course is open to first year students who have taken Govt151 or who have scored a 4 or 5 on the American Politics AP exam. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
