Seminar in the Modern German Lyric

Close readings of works by masters of 20th-century poetry,
including Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Christian Morgenstern,
Rainer Maria Rilke, Stefan George, Georg Trakl, Gottfried
Benn, Bertolt Brecht. Toward the end of the semester we
shall direct our attention to works by two or three
outstanding post-World War II poets. Part of the work of
this semester may consist of translating a selection of poems.
MAJOR READINGS
There will be approximately ten paperback
texts purchased through a book importer and sold directly
to students.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Oral presentations on the
authors and assigned readings. About three short
interpretive papers and one major term paper. A few brief
quizzes during the course of the semester. No final
examination. (Some translation of selected works; see
above).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Regular
participation in class discussion required.
