History, Self and Society in Contemporary German Literature

This course focuses on the last two decades of German literary production in all the main German-speaking countries (Federal Republic, the former German Democratic Republic, Austria, and Switzerland); on the key themes and dominant literary strategies and poetics; and on the dual revolution in literature and politics.

MAJOR READINGS

Among the readings will be--subject to the
vagaries of publishers--works by Heiner Mueller, Christa
Wolf, Christoph Hein, Adolf Muschg, Thomas Bernhard, Botho
Strauss, and others. All will be read in English
translation.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

There will be no exams; one short and one long paper, independently researched.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Knowledge of recent German history helpful; part of the preparation for class will come from news magazines, journals, etc. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
