An introduction to the culture and history of medieval Europe in the twelfth century. Topics will include the specific violences of the Angevin, Capetian, and Hohenstaufen dynasties, the origins of the courtly love-relationship as documented in the love songs of the troubadours and in the courtly romance, the fictional violence of the heroic epics, and the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture, especially in France.
