In 1997-98 this course will focus on Berlin, Germany's once
and future capital. Topics will include: Berlin's vibrant
cultural life during and after World War I; Berlin during
the Nazi period; divided Berlin; and Berlin since
unification. The course will provide extensive practice in
speaking and writing using structured conversation, formal
vocabulary-building, analysis of different types of texts--
journalistic, rhetorical, poetic, visual, scholarly, etc.--
and writing assignments in different genres.
MAJOR READINGS
Selections from a wide range of materials,
including Gunter Grass's most recent novel. Films will be
viewed on videocassette.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly short papers, several
oral reports, some quizzes, a final project.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course is
designed for highly motivated students who wish to refine
their language skills while learning more about German
culture. It counts toward the major in German Studies.
Attendance at certain lectures and functions sponsored by
the German Studies Department and the German House may be
required.
