Contemporary French Identity

What is "French culture"? How do the French view themselves and others? How has the perception of French identity changed in the past fifty years? Students in this course will examine these questions by studying novels, essays, newspaper articles, films, comic strips, and television and radio broadcasts. This course focuses on issues of race, religion, class, and gender. In addition to examining contemporary French civilization, students will improve their command of written and spoken French through grammar exercises, oral presenations, and compositions.

FREN218 is intended for students who have completed FREN215. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before preregistering. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
