The course will attempt to understand the phenomenon of modern Latin American literature in the context of postmodernist preoccupations with language, origins, and writing. Readings will consist of works (in English translation) by Borges, Garcia Marquez, Cortazar, Vargas Llosa, Donoso, and others.

3 papers (3-5 pages); final exam. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
