An introductory survey of motion pictures created within the unique culture of Japan. Using a selection of significant films by such renowned directors as Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu and others, the course will consider popular narrative films from several perspectives: as examples of the art of the motion picture in a society with its own special aesthetic attitudes, and as vehicles for the expression of contemporary and traditional social and political concerns. The variety of topics to be addressed will include the family, gender roles, the Emperor and the nation, the effects of the Second World War, postwar economic recovery, and contemporary economic preeminence.
