Directorial Style: American Film Comedy

An examination of the personal style (both formal and
narrative) of various American film directors and
personalities in the comic tradition. Course will discuss
the overall world view, the directorial style and the
differing functions of humor in films of each director
and/or personality. Keaton, Lubitsch, Capra, Hawks,
Tashlin, Blake Edwards, Billy Wilder, Jerry Lewis and
others.
MAJOR READINGS
To be assigned.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm, final exam,
major paper and oral presentation. Biweekly screenings.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Film majors only.
Enrollment limited to 24. Permission of the instructor
required. Course fee: $40. Preregistered students must
attend the first class meeting or be subject to withdrawal
from the course. Bi-weekly screenings plus extra required
screenings as arranged.
