History of World Cinema to the Second World War

This class will cover pre-history, D. W. Griffith, the
classic cinemas of Russia, Germany, France and Hollywood as
well as the documentary and experimental traditions.
Designed to be a class for those wishing to declare the film
major as well as a general education class. This course is
one of several that may be used to gain entry into further
work in film studies (a mark of B+ or better in any course
used to enter the film major is required).
MAJOR READINGS
A specially prepared document will be given
out at the beginning of class.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A-F based on six written
short papers on specific assigned films, mid-term, and final
exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
