ENGL307
Advanced Medieval Literature Seminar
ENGL307 SP
Crosslistings: MDST307
Next Offered in 9899 SP
In this course, we will have the opportunity to study
intensively the writings of selected medieval authors other
than Chaucer. If the authors wrote their texts in Middle or
Old English we will read them in their original language and
the first weeks of the course will be devoted in part to
learning or refamiliarizing ourselves with this language.
We will read the poetry of William Langland and the
anonymous author of PEARL. Both poets were contemporaries
of Chaucer, but their subjects, styles and audiences
differed significantly from Chaucer's. We will examine the
author's representation of their cultures, and we will place
their texts in their historical, literary, religious and
critical contexts.
