In this course we will approach the topic of bodily fictions
from two perspectives: we will study representations of
bodies in various works of fiction from the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries and we will explore the multiple
cultural fictions routinely produced and reproduced about
such bodies. Some of the themes to be examined include:
literary representations of hysteria, "foreign" bodies and
the politics of race, diseased bodies and fictions of
health and normalcy, discipline and the modern body,
feminist theory and reproductive technologies.

Selected authors may include: Margaret
Atwood, Malek Alloula, Judith Butler, Sigmund Freud, Sylvia
Plath, Michel Foucault, Luce Irigaray, Sander Gilman, Jean
