Postcolonial Literature

This course will introduce the student to literary texts
from a variety of countries, representing formerly colonized
nations in what is now called the Third World, such as
India, Nigeria, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Brazil.
Among other issues, we will discuss whether in fact we are
justified in discussing/creating a literary genre called
"Third World" or "Post-colonial," what are its attributes
if we are so justified and what happens to a text from the
Third World when it is read within the First World.
MAJOR READINGS
Selected authors will include Bharati
Mukherjee, Lewis Nkosi, V.S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Buchi
Emecheta, Jamaica Kincaid, and others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two 5-page and one 10-page
essays. Midterm and final exams.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course counts
toward the English Department's Historicity requirement.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
