Defining a Literary Decade: The American 1930s and the Problem of Periodization ENGL271 SP

Is there an American "Literature of the 30s"? Commonly thought of as the era of social protest literature, the 1930s also saw the publication of historical romance, hard-boiled detective fiction, and modernist writing. This course questions the very notion of a literary period by examining a variety of works that were produced during the Great Depression.

MAJOR READINGS

Some of the authors will include: Steinbeck,
Olsen, Hurston, Wright, Mitchell, Chandler, Hemingway,
Fitzgerald, Faulkner.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two 5-7 page papers; mid-term exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course counts towards the English department's "Historicity" and "Theory" requirements. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
