The Caribbean cloaks a complex history in a Club Med
exterior While white sands and palm trees proclaim it as
the "antidote to civilization," Caribbean writers strive to
represent a fuller picture of colonialism, slavery,
nationalism, and cultural autonomy. This course will
examine selected literary texts as part of an ongoing
dialogue between its presentation as the world's ultimate
resort and its representation as a crossroads of races,
cultures, and histories.
MAJOR READINGS
Among other authors, we will read Maryse
Conde, V. S. Naipaul, Jamaica Kincaid, George Lamming, Andre
Schwarz-Bart, Simone Schwarz-Bart, and Aime Cesaire.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two 5-page and one 10-page
papers. Midterm and final exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course meets
the English department's Historicity requirement.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
