Unlike American literature, with its well-established tradition of the "frontier" and the "hero as rebel," Canadian literature has been defined by a continual struggle to forge a distinct set of themes and images that represent a uniquely Canadian experience and identity. In this course, we will examine a selection of twentieth-century Canadian short stories, poems, and novels to explore and question notions about what defines a distinctly Canadian literature in particular, and any distinct national literature in general. Along with touching on typically "Canadian" themes (such as, for example, survival in a hostile land), we will examine contemporary works that explore the experience of recent immigrant groups living in Canada. Topics will include: the relation between language, culture, and identity; recent immigrant challenges to "official" Canadian history, the symbolic relation of the land to identity; and the role of community in forming identity.
