The most famous women of medieval literature--Criseyde,
the Wife of Bath, the Virgin Mary, the lady of chivalric
romance--are largely the creation of male authors writing
in a patriarchal culture. However, medieval women were not
simply objects of textual construction; they also wrote
texts of their own. This course will explore medieval
literary texts--by both male and female authors--that
"write" women and will juxtapose them with texts in which
medieval women examine the experience of being women in
their age and culture. We will also make use of theoretical
and critical writings in order to place our primary readings
in their ideological and generic contexts.
