Chaucer is one of the sole surviving authors whose
reputation within the literary canon regularly entitles him
to a course of his own. Our study of his works will focus
both on Chaucer's contemporary relations to "literature" and
on his later critical fortunes to determine how he became
the "father of English Poetry."
MAJOR READINGS
Selections from Chaucer's earlier "dream
visions," particularly HOUSE OF FAME, the LEGEND OF GOOD
WOMEN, TROILUS, and as many of THE CANTERBURY TALES as
possible. Shorter readings from Hoccleve, Lydgate, and
Dryden.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two short papers and one
longer (10-15 pp.) paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course counts
toward the English Departments' historicity and pre-1800
requirements. Preregistered students who do not attend the
first class will forfeit their reserved place in the class.
