Introduction to Critical Theory

This course offers an introduction to thinkers and works
that have led to major changes in critical and cultural
theory. Readings are short, but the extracts from
philosophical and linguistic texts are quite demanding.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings selected from Nietzsche, Freud,
Marx, Saussure, Barthes, Derrida, Foucault, Althusser,
and recent feminist theory.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly short papers in the
first nine weeks and a longer final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
A willingness to
read and reread relatively short but conceptually difficult
texts.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
