Intensive Fiction Writing

Group meetings combined with individual conferences
in which student work is discussed. Regular deadline
schedule with a short story or its equivalent due every two
weeks. Enrollment limited to eight. Students admitted to
the class on the basis of short fiction submitted no later
than the last Thursday before preregistration, and interview
with the instructor.
MAJOR READINGS
Text is STORY FIRST: THE WRITER AS INSIDER
by Kit Reed. Short story anthology to be assigned. Other
readings are prescribed according to individual students'
needs. Reading also includes work by other students for
group meetings.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Average 18 to 20 pages due
every two weeks after initial short assignments.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Upperclassmen are
preferred. It is useful but not required for applicants to
have taken beginning or intermediate writing courses. See
description.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
