Imperial Fantasies: Gender and the Literature of English Empire

This First Year Initiative course will focus on the
literature of English Empire in the nineteenth century. We
will consider the relationship between femininity and the
"English civilizing mission," the emergence of the New Woman
and narratives of racial decline, Victorian voyages into the
"dark continent," and the gender politics of Orientalism.
Readings will include works of fiction, poetry, and prose.

Two short papers (5 pages) and
a final project (10-12 pages).

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
