Coral Reef Ecology and Geology
E&ES306 SP

Photo Caption and Credits

Next Offered in 9899 SP

This course analyzes the inter-relationships between geologic setting, physical processes and ecologic zonation within the tropical reef environment dominated by the association of symbiotic corals and benthic algae. The course will consist primarily of readings and discussion of research literature on the topic. Laboratory examination of coralline and algal species and their sedimentary by-products will focus on benthic community analysis. A major component of the course will be a concentrated ten-day session during the midsemester recess taught in the field at a station on the barrier reef offshore Belize, Central America. Mornings daily will be spent in lecture-seminar-laboratory, followed by afternoon field trips and experiments in and around the reef habitat.

MAJOR READINGS

Extensive readings from a variety of texts
and the primary literature.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One exam, one literature review paper and several classroom presentations are required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course is designed for advanced Biology or E&ES majors, but is also appropriate for majors from any of the natural sciences as long as they have taken either E&ES 106 (Oceanography) or BIOL207 (Physiology & Evolution). All students must complete a strenuous qualifying swimming test before leaving for the field component. SCUBA diving will NOT be a permitted activity in this course. Enrollment will be limited to 12 students by application during Drop/Add registration. Students will have to pay their own transportation to and accommodations at the field station. In addition, a facilities fee will be charged by the department for the use of laboratory facilities and equipment, boats, and vehicles. It is estimated that the total cost of the field component will be approximately $1,500.00 per student. University or departmental resources may be available to cover part of these expenses. A $700.00 deposit will be required from each student at the time of application for registration.
