This course focuses on 19th and 20th century United States
economic history. The course emphasizes the application of
economic tools to the analysis of United States history. In
addition the course aims to provide students with a sense of
the historical dynamics that have shaped the contemporary
economic system. Rather than providing a general survey of
the economic history of the entire period, the course will
focus on topics including cyclical fluctuations, the
evolution of the monetary and financial systems,
immigration, labor markets and the role of government
policy. Students will be responsible for leading (and
participating in) class discussions.
MAJOR READINGS
Atack & Passell, A NEW VIEW OF AMERICAN
ECONOMIC HISTORY (2nd ed.)
Selected journal articles and original documents.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Numerous papers will be
assigned; final exam as scheduled by the Registrar.

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
