The transition of the formerly centrally planned and bureaucratically managed economies of the now defunct Soviet bloc to market oriented economies based on private initiative is an event unparalled in history. After a brief overview of the issues, we consider three major aspects of the transition, namely, stabilization/ liberalization, financial sector reform, and privatization. The experiences of Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Russia are examined. Our objective is to compare the various roads embarked upon by the transforming countries and to assess future prospects (e.g., integration into the European Union.)

About the Photo:

" 'We shall fulfill the decisions of the Party Congress' announces the 'new' communist man. Two passers-by take no notice... nor did most of the Russian economy. The centrally planned economy...was generally conceded to have failed."
