This class will focus on theories of human movement developed by Rudolf Laban known as Effort/Shape and Space Harmony. It will introduce this material through improvisation, composition assignments, observation, readings and group discussion, both as a methodology for observing/describing the structural and qualitative aspects of human movement and as a means of experiencing a greater range of personal expressivity and creativity in movement. This approach to movement analysis can be applied to, and provide insight in, the study of anthropology, psychology, theater and education as well as dance performance, choreography, teaching and scholarship.
