Joan of Arc, cross-dresser, witch, heretic, saint, hero,
savior of her country, exemplifies the production of the
past at its most problematic. She was tried twice (burned
once, canonized once) and subjected to the scrutiny or
glorification of some 3,200 books, including not only works
of history but also plays and novels, not to mention movies
and operas by Verdi and Tchaikovsky. This course will
examine what we "know" about Joan of Arc and how and why she
could be projected as a figure of romance, tragedy, and
parody.
