One-semester intensive course, designed to develop basic skills of aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing with special emphasis on pronunciation and tonal accuracy in the first 6 weeks. A solid foundation in grammar and linguistic syntax is built and a vocabulary of 800 items and approximately 500 Chinese characters are introduced in the course.
COURSE FORMAT:inese (Intensive) ] One-semester intensive course, designed to develop basic skills of aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing with special emphasis on pronunciation and tonal accuracy in the first 6 weeks. A solid foundation in grammar and linguistic syntax is built and a vocabulary of 800 items and approximately 500 Chinese characters are introduced in the course. MAJOR READINGS: BEGINNING CHINESE by John De Francis EXAMINATIONS and ASSIGNMENTS: Written and oral homework are assigned daily. Written and oral review quizzes are given every week. Midterm and final examinations. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS: Chinese 108 is designed only for truly interested and dedicated students. In addition to a minimum of one hour daily spent in the language laboratory, three hours per day of study outside of class are required of students of Chinese 108. Excellent attendance and punctuality are strictly observed. Each student is allowed a maximum of five absences per semester. Course Format: Laboratory Language Instruction
