Fundamentals of statistical thermodynamics, elementary applications to crystalline solids, molecular liquids, electrolyte solutions and chemical reactions in the gas phase and in solution. Kinetic theory, transport and diffusion, chemical kinetics, absolute reaction rate theory and molecular reaction dynamics. Course begins with a brief review of equilibrium thermodynamics. This is a survey physical chemistry course for first-year graduate students, required for the Ph.D. It may be taken as a third semester of undergraduate physical chemistry by senior chemistry majors, but is not a formal requirement.
