An introduction to the fundamental principles of chemistry with an emphasis on environmental and biochemical issues. This course plus CHEM142, which will also emphasize biochemical issues, satisfies a premedical requirement and is a suitable introduction for a chemistry or other science major. It contains more qualitative material than the more quantitative course CHEM143 and does not require calculus. The course is designed either for those students who are interested in environmental/biochemical issues or those who have little or no secondary school chemistry.
