Society and Culture in Ancient Greece

A modified form of the "Great Books" course, in which the
major texts from Greek antiquity are read in the context of
the social, historical and economic realities of the culture
which produced them. The course encompasses readings in all
the major genres, and lecture and slide presentations on
such topics as law, medicine, religion, women and the
family, the military and the ancient economy.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Three hour examinations, one
after each major section of the course is completed. Each
examination will consist of 25 short-answer questions based
on the lectures and two short essays based on the readings.
For each hour examination, the student may choose to submit
a 5 page paper in lieu of the essay section.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course will
normally meet T/Th 2:40-4:00. However, four classes will
not meet due to Jewish holidays. To make up for these
missed meetings, classes meeting on September 15, 22, 29 and
October 6 will run from 2:40-5:30 p.m.
