This course examines the ancient city of Athens from its origin in prehistory to the Roman period. We will concentrate on the archaic and classical phases (ca. 700-350 BCE) considering the relationship of city and countryside, uses of private and public space, the permutations of the Agora (marketplace) and Acropolis, and evidence for daily life, political and religious activities. The expression of ideology through art and architecture and the roles of historical events and politics in shaping the city will be major concerns.
