The history of archaeology and its application are considered in a variety of areas and historical contexts. Emphasis will be on the historical development of cultures in the Middle East, the Aegean, Europe, Mesoamerica, North America, and the Pacific and on the way archaeological techniques and concepts have shaped our understanding of those cultures.
