A study of the major Greek tragedies and comedies. Discussion will include the origins of drama in Greece, Greek theater production, the historical and social context of the plays and the relation of drama to myth.

MAJOR READINGS

An extensive selection of plays by
Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two short papers, a mid-term and a final; students will be responsible for reading about two or three plays per week.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
