This course is designed to provide undergraduates with an in-depth exposure to a current research area in biology and an opportunity to interact with distinguished scientists. The course will meet on four successive Thursdays. The first meeting will serve to introduce the semester's topic and provide background to the specific research areas of the guest lecturers. In the second and third weeks, visiting scientists will present differing views or approaches to the topic under discussion. Immediately following these seminars, students will meet with the speakers informally. In the final week there will be a general discussion of the topic, with an attempt to resolve and/or integrate the material presented by the guest speakers. The general subject area will rotate over a two year cycle among the four areas of the biology curriculum. The sequence is: genetics (fall), physiology (spring), cell/developmental biology (fall), evolution/behavior (spring). The course may be taken more than once for credit. One registration is required of majors.
