This course deals with the function of cells at a structural and molecular level. Dynamic properties of cells will be examined using an approach that integrates information from advanced microscopic techniques together with genetic and molecular biology approaches. Topics include cell motility and the cytoskeleton, cell cycle and cell growth control, cell interactions and signal transduction, protein synthesis and sorting, chromatin structure and cell division. The course will combine lectures and student presentations, and will make use of a standard text as well as original scientific papers.

MAJOR READINGS

Alberts et al, "Molecular Biology of the
Cell", and current literature.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One midterm exam, one class presentation, one term p[aper, and a final exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
