Biotechnology: The Challenge of Moving a Discovery From the Bench to the Clinic

This course is designed to provide insight into the process by which biological laboratory discoveries are turned into useful diagnostic or therapeutic interventions for human disease. Topics will include methods of discovery of biotherapeutics and their production, animal models for human disease, the protection of intellectual property, safety and efficacy testing required by regulatory agencies such as the FDA. The goal of the course is an understanding and appreciation of the complex and scientifically sophisticated and rigorous process of moving a discovery from the bench into the clinic and the diverse scientific disciplines which must be applied and orchestrated to achieve this end.

Grading will be based on class participation and one paper. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
