BIOL212

The Biologist as Modern Intellectual
BIOL212 SP

Crosslistings: COL 212

Next Offered in 9899 SP

Biologists have been in the forefront of intellectual development in recent years, as a result of the explosive interest in biology. Their dramatic findings have caused us to reconsider the framework in which we view ourselves and our position in the world. Modern thought has been enriched by such scientist-authors as Loren Eisely, Gunther Stent, Rene Dubos, Francis Crick, Lewis Thomas, Stephen Jay Gould, Oliver Sacks, Jacques Monod, Edward O. Wilson and Theodosius Dobzhansky, among others. In this course selections of the major works of intellectual biologists will be read and analyzed. The course will take a seminar format and will emphasize student discussion.
