Next Offered in 9798 FA

This course prepares and requires students to use the refracting telescope of the Van Vleck Observatory without supervision. Astronomeric research is covered, with emphasis on the observatory programs that determine stellar positions, parallaxes and proper motions and their relations to the structure and dynamics of our Milky Way Galaxy. Some topics in galactic structure and kinematics are also covered.

MAJOR READINGS

Several review papers and portions of
textbooks.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several hour examinations will be given an extensive familiarity with the Van Vleck refractor and measuring techniques are required in order to pass the course.
