Astrometry & Galactic Kinematics ASTR221 FA

Astrometric research is covered, with emphasis on the observatory programs which determine stellar positions, parallaxes and proper motions and their relations to the structure and dynamics of our Milky Way Galaxy. Some topics in galactic structure and kinematics are also covered.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several hour examinations will be given and an extensive familiarity with the Van Vleck refractor and measuring techniques are required in order to pass the course.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students are expected to participate regularly on the observing program of the refractor. ASTR155 or the equivalent is necessary to take this course.
